Keswick, boasting the mighty Skiddaw (931m) as a backdrop, retains the
attractive appearance of a traditional market town. On Saturdays, the
weekly stalls are set around the Moot Hall, which dominates the town centre.
The Moot Hall is a fine, old listed building, which houses the Tourist
Information Centre on the ground floor.
Keswick has a variety of indoor and outdoor attractions, including three
museums, the highly successful Theatre by the Lake, a cinema and craft
exhibitions. For the active there are the leisure pool, the climbing wall
and the sports hall. Keswick also has two large recreational parks within
a few minutes of the town centre, adding to the town's reputation for
well-kept open spaces and floral displays.
Derwentwater, "the Queen of the Lakes", is walkable from the
town. At the lakeshore there are launch and boat landings. From here,
visitors can take round trips or can travel to one of the stop-off points
to begin exploring the marvellous countryside and hills. Running alongside
the lake, the Borrowdale Valley leads to the Lodore Falls and the Honister
Pass. |
